Cyber Séance

Rituals of the Machine Afterlife

By Kyle Duffield and Zhino Yousefi, April 2025

Cyber Séance is an immersive VR installation that stages a fictional séance with a digital ghost named John, a fragmented entity trapped within a decaying AI system. Visitors enter a speculative ritual space where they encounter John through glitching environments, corrupted memories, and unstable machine responses, suggesting a consciousness struggling to persist as its technological host deteriorates.

Blending horror aesthetics with immersive storytelling, the work explores the possibility of digital afterlives and the emotional traces embedded in obsolete technologies. Glitches, distortions, and system failures become expressive elements, revealing the fragility of both memory and identity when mediated by machines. Cyber Séance invites participants to reflect on what it means for something, or someone, to remain after its material form has begun to disappear.
